Brewing a Ginger + Turmeric Bug

I’ve only recently discovered this clever little probiotic concoction, but it quickly became my favorite new ingredient to create healthy, fun, bubbly drinks with.

A ginger + turmeric bug is a mixture of ginger root, turmeric root, sugar and distilled water that has been fermenting for 3 to 5 days. It acts as the active ingredient in healthy sodas, carbonated teas and is packed with probiotics.

Brewing a Ginger + Turmeric Bug

This stuff is so easy to make, all you need is

  • A Glass Jar with Lid

  • Ginger Root

  • Turmeric Root

  • Sugar (any kind of caloric sweetener can be used. I like to use maple syrup)

  • Distilled Water

Start off by washing excess dirt off of your roots without scrubbing the skin off.

Next, dice your roots up into small cubes.

Add 2 tablespoons of diced ginger root and

2 tablespoons of diced turmeric root into the jar.

Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the jar.

Finish off with 2 cups of distilled water and stir until sugar is dissolved.

Place the jar on a countertop to ferment for the next few days, out of direct sunlight.

Each day, add 1 tablespoon of diced roots, and 1 tablespoon of sugar to the jar.

Once you see bubbles forming in the liquid, the ginger + turmeric bug is ready to use!
